"God is pursuing with omnipotent passion a worldwide purpose of gathering joyful worshipers for Himself from every tribe and tongue and people and nation…Therefore let us bring our affections into line with His, and, for the sake of His name, let us renounce the quest for worldly comforts and join His global purpose."

What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?

In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

The Romans Road – God’s Plan of Salvation.

NOTE:  If you have stumbled onto this article, don’t think it’s a coincidence.  God may have very well planned for you to be here today.  Perhaps you did an internet search on “Roman’s Road” or “Plan of Salvation.” If that’s the case, would you consider leaving a comment?  I would enjoy hearing from you and being able to pray for you.

The Book of Romans contains a series of verses that explain God’s plan of Salvation for man.  “The Romans Road” as it is frequently called is a simple yet powerful method of explaining:

o       Why we need salvation

o       How God Provided Salvation

o       How we can be saved from our sins and have eternal life with God.

Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”

We have all sinned. Every one of us falls short of God’s glory and His plan for us.    Read Through Romans 3:10-18 for more information.

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Because of our sin, we are separated from God.  We cannot know eternal life except through Him.

Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

This verse finishes what is started in Romans 6:23.  For our purposes here, visualize your sin as deep, black, wide crevice or fissure in the Earth before you.  When you look across the divide, you can see your goal.  God is waiting there for you.  Your sin is keeping your from Him.  As you stand on the edge if you look left or right you cannot see the ends.  If you look down, you cannot see the bottom.    The gap is insurmountable for you, but Jesus Christ died for you! Jesus’ death paid for the price of our sins. Jesus’ resurrection proves that God accepted Jesus’ death as the payment for our sins.  Jesus’ death is the bridge that will span your sin and return you to God.

Romans 10:9, “…that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Jesus died on the cross for you and me.  As such, all we have to do is believe in Him. You must have faith that Christ’s blood was shed for you and you will be saved!  Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sins and rescue us from eternal death. He bridged the gap.  Salvation, the forgiveness of sins, is available to anyone who will trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.  When you ask God to forgive your sins, you have been washed clean.  The stain of sin is no longer on you.

Romans 6:10-18    The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.  Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.  For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.  What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted.  You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

While generally not included in the “Roman’s Road” I believe these verses are crucial to the salvation story.  While believing in Jesus and what he did  is essential.  Repentance is necessary.  You must turn from your sin and pursue holiness and obedience.  You cannot claim Christ and still lead a life of sin.  It is impossible.  You will still sin, but you must diligently pursue righteousness.

Romans 5:1   “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Please know that accepting Jesus as your Personal Savior is not just about Eternal Life.

Peace with God means that you have a relationship with Him both here on Earth and eternally in Heaven.  You can now walk with Him and be in tune with the plan that He has for you.  You have been forgiven and now you are being restored to the life He has for you while you walk this Earth.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that your life with God will be like living on easy street.  You will face challenges and trials.  In fact, you may face more challenges now that you have accepted Christ.  Now you are a threat to Satan.  When you were lost in your sin, Satan had you where he wanted you.  Now that you are a child of God, Satan wants you back.  He certainly wants to make sure you don’t share what God is doing in your life.

If you want to accept Christ as your personal savior, you have to pray and ask God to forgive your sins.  You have to willingly invite him to live in your heart.  You need to confess your sins and admit that you are sinful by nature.  The words must be yours.  Your heart must be right.  Take time to read through the verses outlined above.  Seek the counsel of other Christ followers.  If you have questions, please leave a comment.  If you have accepted Christ, please let me know so I can pray for you.  Also, if you have accepted Christ please look at the page titled “what do I do next.”  There you will find an article that will get you started on your journey with God.

  1. hi… i did search for romans road… a little story. i have a friend who has been very interested in Christ. i have been meeting with her only a couple times to share with her and just be her friend. i wanted to print out the romans road for her… i meant to do this last week and it didn’t work out. i was getting ready this morning and decided i better do it today, since i am leaving on vacation tomorrow. so i layed it out and printed it on a nice sheet of paper. i stopped by her house this a.m. and gave it to her. God is so good. He had already prepared the way and it was perfect timing. SHe had been to a funeral the day before and the speaker spoke on the romans road, so every verse i read to her, she had just heard and she said that while he was speaking it just clicked, a light came on. she decided to make a decision for Christ. I am just amazed at how He orchestrates things and works out the details… and not only that but how He uses us if we are willing in spite of us. Thanks for your page, it was very helpful and i just thought you might be encouraged by this little story. sorry for the run-on sentences… 🙂

  2. Britta,

Thank you for sharing. You are right, God is Good and has a plan. We must be willing and ready when God calls. It seems as though you were.

    God Bless,

    Jeff

  3. The Lord of the harvest and one who is obedient to Him – an unbeatable combination!

  4. Thank you for your kind words. I too have been incommunicado for a while. I hope to get back to this soon.

  7. Please help us find a marked edition of The Romans Road Plan of Salvation & The Epistle to the Romans so we can send it to dying sinners! We have seen this publication but don’t know where to obtain it. The edition we have in mind has the illustrated plan of salvation, page by page: “Believe in God’s Word”; The Payment for Sin”; “Repentance”; By Grace, not by Works”; “Redemption by Blood”;”Salvation at Calvary”; “The end of the Journey”. Thank you for sowing the seeds of salvation!!! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

  8. you don’t mention baptism…which is essential.

    • I certainly do not want to diminish the necessity of Baptism, but this was an article regarding the ‘Romans Road’ verses written for those searching for a Biblical foundation for Salvation, or for those looking for a guide when sharing Christ with others.

I do not believe that baptism is essetial to Salvation. It is necessary as we pursue holiness and righteousness, but the Bible is clear that Salvation is by grace alone and not by works.

      Consider Matthew 3:13-15:

“Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, ‘Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.’ Then John consented.”
Baptism is a work of righteousness. Salvation is by Grace, not by works.

      Titus 3:4-7 says:

“But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5he saved us, NOT BECAUSE OF THE RIGHTEOUS THINGS WE HAD DONE, BUT BECAUSE OF HIS MERCY. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by HIS GRACE, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.”
God has called believers to be baptized with water as a symbol or public commitment of their faith. Nothing in the act of being baptized saves anyone. I was baptized as an infant and have no recollection of the event. I accepted Jesus when I was 18 years old. Only recently was I baptized because I believe God called me to be baptized as an expression of my commitment to pursue righteousness and holiness.

Thank you for stopping by and raising this issue. I appreciate your input.

      • Rom. 10:13 – whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

How do we do that? The common answer is to say the sinner’s prayer – something not found in Scripture.

Acts 22:17 IS found in scripture. “Why do you delay, arise and be baptized and wash away yours sins calling on the name of the Lord.”
Baptism is how we call on the Lord. It’s how we wash away our sins.

See also Acts 2:21 where “calling on the Lord” for salvation is also mentioned. They ask – “what shall we do?” vs. 37. The answer? Vs. 38 – be baptized for the remission of your sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Baptism is how we call on the Lord. It’s how we contact the blood of Jesus. AND GUESS WHAT – IT’S PART OF THE ROMAN ROAD!!!

Rom. 6:3-6! We are “baptized into Christ.”

      • Dan, I appreciate your comments and have decided to leave them posted for now, to keep the dialogue going. However, your tone in the last few sentences was certainly confrontational. Perhaps I should have been clear with regard to the term baptism….essentially ‘water’ baptism. I would refer you to Quinn McAuley’s brief commentary:

“It is a tragedy that so many people have been led into confusion based on the mistranslation of a Greek word. Most Greek words in the Bible are translated (a suitable English word is used for the appropriate Greek word), but some are merely transliterated (a Greek word is carried over into English). This is true of the Greek word ‘baptismos’. This has caused great confusion because church tradition has taught too many people to read water into every scripture that mentions baptism. In Scripture there are many baptisms (some have counted as many as 17 different baptisms in Scripture). There is the baptism with water signifying purification (Acts 1:5), and the baptism with the Holy Spirit (same verse). Now if words have any meaning, these two are not the same ‘baptisms’. I truly mean no irreverence, but if baptize always means to immerse in water, then the verse should read “For John truly ‘immersed you in water’ with water; but ye shall be ‘immersed in water’ with the Holy Spirit…” This brings up another distinction that must be made. The Jews were to be united to (the correct meaning of the word ‘baptize’ here) the Holy Spirit through Christ. This is Christ placing the Jewish believers into union with the Holy Spirit.

This is different than the baptism of Romans 6. There is no water anywhere in Romans 6. In Romans 6 we have the Christian believer being placed into union with Christ by the Holy Spirit. This is careful language. The believer is united to Christ in death. When Christ died, we died with Him. This blessed union is the foundation for Godly living (Romans chapters 6&7). So in Acts 1:5 we have two separate and distinct baptisms, serving two separate and distinct purposes, and in Romans 6 we have a third baptism. Since Scripture only allows the Christian believer one baptism (Ephesians 4:5), which one is it? Is it the Jewish baptisms in early Acts, or is it the one baptism which Paul preaches throughout his ministry?”
I hope this clears things up as to my position and would ask that any further comments refrain from “picking a fight.” Countless non-beleivers arrive at this blog, and many others, looking for something to point them to Christ. I would hate for anyone to to be turned off by the Gospel by what they might see as irrelevant quarreling.

        Thanks

      • I didn’t mean to sound like picking a fight. I’m not one of those kind of guys at all. I realize that some see all caps and think yelling or anger. I meant it as excitement.

      • Thanks for the clarification.

    • 1 Corinthians 1:17
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel–not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

    • Baptism is a public profession to show that one has decided to accept Jesus Christ into their life, but it has nothing to do with whether you are saved or not.

  9. I was looking to share some salvation verses with my family to commemorate the death of a Christian grandmother and came across your website….it was a blessing as I extended my hands towards my laptop and asked the Holy Spirit to bless the email and the people it was intended for and the response was so positive. God uses His children in ways they do not know…thank you for putting this salvation webpage together…I even received an invitation to meet some distant family members and share more of Jesus to them. thanks again.

    • Lynda,

It does my heart good to know that you were able to use these verses to share Jesus. Thank you for comment. May God bless you in the coming weeks as we celebrate the birth of our Savior.

      Jeff

  10. Good stuff Mr. Jeff…. I will be studying through Romans for however long it takes me… This helps with my decision in witnessing to my family! The thought of this scares the “the daylights” out of me and I really have no idea why… Maybe because Im scared of how they will react, feel or treat me afterwards… Thats probably normal and I should remember that God has it all under control!

  11. Hi, I did do a search for Romans Road. I have a friend who is alive, I believe as a direct answer to prayer from the Lord. He attempted suicide and came only too close for comfort. The Lord I know used this as a way to show me that I don’t have the time in this world to wait for a “good” time to tell my loved ones about Jesus’ gift of salvation. I wanted to print this off for him so that we could talk through it together and I trust that God will be working in his life and I pray He uses me in my friend’s life and hopefully salvation!

Thank you for this website. 🙂

    • K,
Thank you for your comment. I am glad that you were able to find something to help you in sharing the Gospel with your friend. I will add him to my prayer list…praying for his salvation as well as his recovery (physical and spiritual). If you feel comfortable in providing his first name or initials, please do so. regardless, I will put him in my prayers. Given your words about the immediacy of sharing the gospel, you might be interested in a book called “Radical” by David Platt. Please check out http://www.radicalthebook.com. God Bless,

      Jeff

  12. Salvation and Baptism are two different things. However, once you have experienced salvation according to Acts 2:38 you are commanded to be baptized. But please, notice you can be saved anywhere. God is waiting for you to ask him into you heart anytime anywhere. Follow the Romans Road to Salvation. Like a young babe you must first start out with the milk…

  13. When I read Acts 2:38, it seems that both repentance and baptism are required for the forgiveness of sins. I don’t believe that baptism alone saves anyone but it doesn’t seem like Salvation and Baptism should be separated. Also, Romans 6:1-4 should be included in the Roman Road. Any thoughts???

  14. Today I will be visiting my daughter in law’s grandmother who may not be saved. I want to make sure she is saved and so I was getting prepared for that visit. Please pray for God’s anointing and an open door.

    • Dorothy,

Thank you for your comment and your prayer request. I will pray that God gives you and opportunity to share and the words to speak. Please keep me updated as to how your conversation goes. Thank you for remaining faithful in sharing God’s plan of salvation for all of us. God bless you in your efforts to bring him glory.

  15. Today I’m going to evangelizing on my college campus and I wanted to find something easy to do to share the Gospel. Found your excellent post and I’m excited to begin sharing this afternoon! Thanks! 🙂

  16. I was on this website looking for some ideas and encouragment to witness to my friend at work. Hes a nice guy but has a lil bit of a rough lifes syle. He used to drink but stopped because he started a family. However, hes still lost and yal just dont know how heavy my heart is with this burden. I dont want to see him or any one go to Hell, but he doesnt then that means his whole family will unless Jesus comes into the picture. Please pray that I will a good witness for my friend and ANY advice would be greatly appreciated.

  17. I am witnessing to a young lady at work, her name is Ashley ,who knows next to nothing about our LORD or what HE is about. Please pray that the HOLY SPIRIT will give me the right words to say and that HE will convict her. And to GOD be the glory.
